Facts
On 19 March 2025 officers intercepted an unladen tip truck towing a trailer loaded with an excavator whilst it was travelling on the Leichhardt Highway at Lonesome Creek. In a combination, the mass on an axle group or a single axle on a trailer must not exceed the sum of the mass of all axles of the towing vehicle. The heavy vehicle and its load were inspected and weighed. The sum of all axles on the towing vehicle had an assessed mass of 11.5 tonnes and therefore the permitted gross mass of the trailer was 11.5 tonnes. The trailer’s mass was weighed to measure 20.65 tonnes. Following relevant mass adjustments, the trailer’s mass had an assessed weight of 19.65 tonnes. This exceeded the weight of the towing vehicle by 8.5 tonnes. The trailer was the equivalent of 176.23% overloaded. The contravention of the vehicle’s permitted mass resulted in a severe risk breach.
