HVNL changes start in one month — know… — Safe Freight Mate, 4 July
NHVR Latest News · Regulatory Update
The NHVR says the Heavy Vehicle National Law changes are now one month away from commencement. That matters because legal duties, enforcement settings and day-to-day compliance expectations can change quickly once the amended HVNL starts, and drivers are often the first ones questioned roadside.
Operator note: Before your next run, get a copy of the updated Heavy Vehicle National Law change summary from your operator and check exactly what has changed for your work diary, vehicle checks and roadside powers — the NHVR has flagged these HVNL changes as taking effect in one month.
NHVR Latest News · Safety Alert
The NHVR is pushing a safety campaign aimed at young drivers about staying visible around heavy vehicles. For truck drivers, the message is simple: smaller vehicles still sit in blind spots, cut in without enough room and make poor decisions around trailers, so you need to drive assuming they have not seen you.
Operator note: At every merge, roundabout and left turn, do an extra mirror sweep for cars sitting beside the cab or trailer before you move — this NHVR ‘Don’t turn a blind eye’ campaign is specifically about visibility around heavy vehicles.
Safe Freight Mate · Driver Wellness
A lot of people in transport will not say straight out that they are struggling. The warning signs are usually changes in mood, behaviour or routine, and a quiet check-in can make it easier for them to talk before things get worse.
Operator note: Next time you notice a mate going quiet, looking worn out or missing the usual check-ins, ask them privately, ‘You don’t seem yourself lately — you alright?’ Then stop talking and let them answer.
